Old books

Old books
Saturday Self Challenge: Books.

We have books in our sitting room, dining room, study, 3 bedrooms, kitchen and music room, plus in a bookcase on our landing. They are mostly in large bookcases, but also on tables and the floor. There is little or no organisation of authors although dictionaries are all in the same place.

The 2 books shown here were my Dad's.He was born in 1901 and left school at the age of 14. The arithmetic book ( New Commercial Arithmetic) has his signature in it. After he left school he did an apprenticeship in watchmaking and silver-smithing, hence the second book here on Assey marks. Eventually he was an instrument maker working for the Royal Aircraft Establishment.

I wonder how many of us could calculate the price of 5438 articles @ £3, 11s, and 4 1/2d without a calculator. ;-)

isn't this worth a group Amelia. I have lots of old books as well and I just saw an upload of a pic of Meyer's Encyclopedia of 1894

Fantastic find and treasure, Amelia !!!!! I am not sure that the new generation will appreciate these old books, now times are focusing on PC, tablets, but nothing will replace the marvelous odor of the books and the touch of paper !!!!!!!! Happy Saturday !

A lovely piece of family history, Amelia. There is something quite special about holding something in your hands that a loved one wrote in so long ago.I marvel at the beautiful handwriting that everyone from that era seemed to possess (men as well as women!). These days penmanship is no longer taught in schools to any degree, which is a shame, really.

I have the 'First Book of Arithmetic' dated 1871 published for the Commissioners of National Education Ireland, if this is the first book it has some wonderful division and multiplication questions !!!!!! Grandad has signed and dated it 1890 and Grandmother 1872 I have no idea why

Splendid! My parents have that assay mark guide and it has proved useful (as well as interesting) over the years!
Their home in Cornwall is exactly as you (and Pam) describe with large bookcases anywhere they can be placed and books book books everywhere! Heaven!

Interesting image and background information. Memories of old arithmetic tests involving pounds, shillings and pence (we're now metric) ! Metric is certainly easier. But I doubt my grandkids could even read cursive script, let alone write it. Keep me posted if a group eventuates. :-)

Interesting books and good to have memories. Nice to reflect. Interesting too that I wouldnt bother to try to perform the calculation by mental arithmetic but I would use excel and not even a calculator. How things change.
