St Edmundsbury Cathedral

St Edmundsbury Cathedral
Originating in the 11th century, the cathedral was rebuilt in the 12th and 16th century as a parish church and became a cathedral in 1914. Work started on a Gothic revival style tower in 2000; funded by the Millennium Commission, the Stephen Dykes Bower Trust and others. I think some monies came from the EU as well. That won't happen for much longer I'm afraid.

It stands in the grounds of the ruins of the old abbey, which was built in the early 10th century, Parts of the ruins can be seen here.

The cathedral stands in the grounds of rather beautiful gardens, Roy, so maybe that accounts for the number of tree species. We must visit again when the gardens are at their best.

A terrific shot. This is a cathedral I certainly have never visited. A pity.

Apparently it's the jewel in the crown of Suffolk, Andy. It is lovely inside too - all expertly renovated by craftsmen and women.

A lovely image. It's certainly had quite a time of development.

I wouldn't have noticed the tower is new, only after looking closely you realize it's very clean:-)
