Boat trips down the Maenam Tha and Maenam Ha River offer unique bird watching opportunities and can be arranged in Namtha District. Boats going down the Maenam Tha River to the Mekong, with further connections to Luang Prabang or Houeixai (Thai Border crossing), can also be arranged in Namtha District and offer an alternative to road travel.

The Tha River rises on the Chinese frontier and flows generally southwestward in deep, narrow valleys for about 215 km to join the Mekong River at a point some 32 km southeast of Ban Houay Xay. Navigable only by small craft, the Tha is nonetheless the principal stream of extreme northwestern Laos.
