Our tour in northern Laos

Luang Prabang and the north of Laos

After all my previous visits to Laos in the last 16 years this excursion to the north and north-east of Laos was one of my most exciting tours in this fascinating country. The destination Phongsali is so much beside the main routes that its better to be reach from Yunnan/China than from the south part of Laos; we did it coming from Oudom Xai 232 km to Phongsali with the speed of 15 - 20 km per hou…  (read more)

Phongsali and a bad Chinese influence

When you enter Phongsali you feel at the end of Laos but connected to the Chinese. I wonder why the Chinese in that town show such a extremely chauvinism although they aren't in their own country. As we liked to move in the well known Phou Fa Hotel up on a hill, the receptionist told that the Chinese booked the full hotel and don't like other guests like us or from other countries than China. Please get in mind that we weren't in China, were in Laos!

A walk through the small city

In the centre of the town are houses built in Yunnanese style with ornate wooden fronts. This is quite rare as the preserved city was not destroyed like other cities in northern Laos during the Vietnam War by bombing. The town is a very good starting point for individual travelers who like touring 2, 3 or more days in this beautiful mountain landscape.

Tourist information center in Phongsali

24 Dec 2009 570
Travelers get a value information about where to stay and what to do in Phongsali and the area around. We stayed in a nice private guesthouse close to this info center, which wasn't occupied and full booked by arrogant Chinese business men.

Phongsali at the daily market

Every market is an ideal meeting point for getting closer to the citizen people, making conversations. The Thai language is helpful to understand each other but it isn't their language at all. Laos language and Thai language just is a bit similar.

Pha Sin, mostly known under the Malaisian word "Sarong", is the woman dress in Laos. This market women sell their handicraft products on the floor in front of the market.

Panoramaview to Phongsali

Phongsali is the capital of the province in the middle of the mountains. The town has about 6,000 inhabitants and is located at approximately 1,430 meters on the slopes of Mount Phu Fa (1,625 meters).

The mountains are the foothills of the Himalayan mountain. No high peaks, the highest aren't more than in the altitude of 2,400 meters, but the hills are very cleft.

The Chedi on to the Phou Fa hill

24 Dec 2009 566
After many steps to climb on the city hill, there is a pagoda at the top. People enjoy the nice panorama view and spend their donations to the Chedi. (This stupa covers the ugly view to the cell phone antenna which is constructed on the hill top to serve citizen cellphones downtown.)

The Chedi of Phongsali on Phou Fa hill

Quite new built Stupa where the Buddhist believers come to donate with money bills, whiskey bottles, food and sneaks like full packets of potato chips. Phou Fa, or Mountain in the Sky, sits above Phongsali at an altitude of 1,625 m. A path leading from behind the monument to Kaysone heads up and around to the right. At the base of the mountain, a large sign only in Lao points the way. The site is respected because it is believed that a Boddhi tree, like the one Buddha sat under to meditate, was here. The tree on Phou Fa was apparently gold, and one day it simply disappeared.

Atop the sea of clouds

Phongsali is located in an altitude of more than 2,000 m. The morning starts with a view over a sea of clouds. The 30 km down to the Mae Nam river is a step way down through the fog. When you see the landscape around you get a bit depressed: Because of economic commerce with China, large portions of the province have been deforested.

Down to Hat Sa, the pier at the Nam Ou riverbank

We had to hurry down to Hat Sa to the boats pier to hire the boat for our rafting tour to Muang Khua.
