Valentine & Sons card no. 101,374, showing the Royal Alexandra Hotel and the C.P.R. station from Main and Higgins. Interestingly, at lower right it is signed by Eugene Haberer, who was apparently a Montreal artist and/or engraver at the time. This image may have been prepared in advance of the hotel's opening (early 1906?). It is difficult to tell whether it was done on the basis of an actual photograph or not. The buildings in the background (on the left) appear to me to be figments of the imagination (and of course there is the usual faked street life -- cars, carriages, streetcars, etc.) Would be interesting to know more about this one. The identical image is used in the Clubb/Tom Jones postcard, but the right edge is trimmed off of that one and the remaining first few letters of the Eug. Haberer signature appear to have been deliberately effaced.

Valentine & Sons. no. 106,719 is a lovely multiview of the Rosedale Ravine. The message, which fills the entire back, reads: "Dear Lily, What do you think of this P.C. This is very near where we live. Ocourse [sic] it is not all like this a few miles from here is the city of Toronto + that is almost like London only it is cleaner. With love from Daisy. P.S. Frank always remembers your P.C. Album + wishes it was his."

Valentine & Sons no. 101,620, showing a Johnstown Flood exhibit in Montreal. Message readers "Have received your Photo. It's very good indeed. This place is something like your White City I guess. They charge 15c to see this show, but it's very good indeed, all miniature people, railway trains etc." Addressed to Miss M. S. H. Harris, 24 Cornbrook Park Rd., Old Trefford, Manchester, England and postmarked Lachine Locks, Que., on July 19, 1907.

Valentine & Sons card 106,131, posted on May 18, 1913 at Montreal to Miss Phyllis Prior, 19 Grosvenor Road, Westcliffe-on-Sea Essex, England. "The Windsor Hotel, Montreal, P.Q. Sunday. I have got to spend all day here and find it pretty hard to kill time -- I wish I could take "theh darling" for a walk on the front. It is nice + warm here. Sunny now tho' very wet when I arrived this morning. Best love, C."

Valentine & Sons no. 100,004 postmarked December 7, 1909 to Miss Lenton, Glen Cove, Chester and marked "Doris for her collection": "Very many thanks for your P.C. You was smart. We got up ?? soon after 10 and as you see landed all safe. It's a lovely day to-day. I'm not feeling Chester-sick, though Sat. can come round. K. has a pict. your you when you come up. Love to ... Tuesday. Rose." This would be to Chester, Nova Scotia.

English card mailed July 20, 1911 to M. C. Prest, No. 5 Nowell Terrace, Harehills Lane, Leeds. The letter is from someone who has been to the Coronation (of George V): "Dear C. Just a line hoping you are quite well. We are having a splendid time have come to London today and to the White City we were very lucky on Saturday we saw all the Royal Family and the foreigners that are over for the Coronation. We are staying about twenty miles from the city. I will tell you more when I write with best love E. M. Minnie wishes to be remembered to you." Published by Valentine & Sons Ltd. "Dundee, London & Montreal".
