In Germany, we say: “How are you?”, and get “Thank you!” for an answer. I’ll never get used to that... I’m always tempted to insist: “That wasn’t the question –I asked how you’re doing!”
Very awkward if the answer isn’t “Fine!”, then, as it should be in any polite conversation... ;-)
