The guardians of Noraduz

The guardians of Noraduz
The ancient cemetery of Noraduz, in rural Armenia. It contains the largest collection of giant khachkars ( standing grave stones) still surviving in Armenia. The oldest khachkars in the cemetery date back to the late 10th century. They saw Tamerlane sweep through, and survived wars and invasions galore! The two babushkas were on guard during our visit!

Günter Klaus, m̌ ḫ, ColRam, Annemarie and 37 other people have particularly liked this photo

Such an interesting looking place. I really like the variety of different shapes of the gravestones and the engraving and textures. The lichen on the stones is very attractive. I like the use of sheep for natural grass cutting. A wonderful capture Diana.

WOW!!! That's a sight, isn't it? I've never seen khachkars before. And actual "babushkas"...what a funny word!

What a memorable place, and how lucky you were to visit. Thanks so much for sharing...now I would like to see this place too!

What an interesting place, with beautifully marked ancient headstones. Many years ago, when visiting some ancient sites in Hungary, I found that most historic sites were 'supervised' by old women who just sat there nodding and smiling toothlessly.
