It certainly took my mind off ipernity's pending closure when we found this small Red-Bellied Black Snake in our house, late at night! While venomous, these are not aggressive. This was only a youngster at about 400mm, fully grown they can be up to 2M long. Here it has been safely confined to a saucepan, prior to being released suitably far away.

Explored.

Monica Meeneghan wanted me to post so that you know where she's been:

"I've regretted my disappearance from Ip. I've had sign in problems and then exhaustion from trying unsuccessfully to resolve them."

You can find her on flickr and possibly 23hq down the road. She mentioned she really wants to keep in touch with you.

Wow! The only snake we saw in Australia was a python. Great shot and that would take your mind off everything else.

I've opened an account at 23hq, but am not overly impressed with their interface.

Not much point in killing it, William. They do a useful job of keeping pests under control and are part of the environment (while in the right place). :-)

Also, allegedly, they see off / kill brown snakes which are a more aggressive type.

I always find that idea comforting, Graham, though I must admit I'm unconvinced.

I am laughing knowing a little more of the story.... you omitted the "escape" !!!!

I told Jay... and his comment

"Heck.... you would have been taking pics too I know ! "

Point is...snakes are my job here and the Copperheads and I are not pals, The rest I can live with !

OK, Pam, you force me to come clean with the full details. :-) The situation was "tense" to put it mildly, when I captured the snake and put it in the saucepan. I thought it would be adequately confined so, despite my wife's protests, I went to get my camera. Then there was a scream as the snake climbed out while I was away getting said camera, and the whole capturing process had to be repeated. In a rush I grabbed the camera and, using whatever setting was on it (not very appropriate, it turned out), quickly took two photos and popped the lid on the saucepan before taking the snake outside.

I saw a 1.2M brown climbing the patio stairs and then disappear through a crack to under the slab, where we used to live at Tamworth.

The browns are the ones that worry me, Graham. I've now sealed where this came in, if it had been a brown I'd have been far more concerned.

I love snakes and this one looks very elegant in its temporary home. Your story of getting the camera made me laugh and, much as I like them, I think I'd be a bit nervous of having venomous ones roaming around the house.

I guess they have a purpose in life but they do nothing for me,
Great story though George.
