Streamers on departure of "Nella Dan" from Melbourne, Dec 1965

Streamers on departure of "Nella Dan" from Melbourne, Dec 1965
Copied from an old slide (and, in retrospect, reduced too much in size here).

How much the world has changed! In those days, the custom in Australia was for passengers to throw rolls of streamers to their friends and loved ones staying behind, then hold them until they broke, as the ship pulled away from the wharf. Note too the fashions of the time.

Something I see here that I also see in railfan photos from that time, compared to now, is the lack of obese bodies among the crowd.

Thanks, Graham, that's an interesting observation that I'd not considered. Now you mention it though, I'd have to agree.

What a wonderful picture George. My uncle, who is almost 91 was living in Australia in 1965. He lived in Adelaide. It seemed so, so far away back then!

Thanks, Rosa. Yes, until the wide-bodied aircraft came along in 1970, the air fares were very costly. Doing it by ship involved a very lengthy voyage, even via the Suez canal.

THANKS PAM, WHEN TRAVEL WAS MAINLY BY SHIP IT WAS SIGNIFICANT WHEN SOMEONE LEFT. IT'S ALL CHANGED NOW, I GUESS MAINLY BECAUSE AIR TRAVEL IS SO COMMONPLACE.

Indeed they were, the wharf was near central Melbourne and it was about lunchtime, so I think many were office workers on their lunch break.
