A meme ...

A meme ...
... is an idea, behavior, or style that spreads from person to person within a culture - often with the aim of conveying a particular phenomenon, theme, or meaning represented by the meme.
~Merriam-Webster Dictionary

Advent Wreath is just a pious custom practiced at home, and not a formal liturgical tradition.

Exactly =)

I once spent one winter in Inari, 200 km north from polar circle, and there it was truly dark. And need for candles, fire and artificial lights was even compelling.

Very beautiful, Sami !! In France we had no Advent calendar and no candle lights before Xmas when I was young. At home we just made a Naivity scene without Jesus. My mother used to put a little sheep in the front of the scene that was moving day after day towards the D Date. Naturally I would have done something wrong, the sheep had going backwards. Well this was the ideal solution to have a peaceful time with me before Xmas !!! To conclude, on December 25, Jesus was added to the Nativity scene and we could open our gifts.

Because of comments like your's and lively discussion on MM2 discussion area I would not afraid to have such "religious" and "political" topics more often =D

Anything history and culture related can be interesting! We have ginger bread house tradition, which is a little like nativity scene. Or that is what they have became these days. It no longer contains only the house, but all kinds of stuff around and inside of it.

And did you know the Catalan tradition to hide a little "caganer" in the nativity scene? ;-)

No, Sami, never heard of this Caganer before lol ! Thank you for the info !! This is a tradition from the South of France!

About the caganer tradition, a current expression is "me cago en dió y en la puta madre que lo parió", (I poo on god and in the fucking mother who gave him birth ), maybe the caganer comes from there...? There are a lot of different explanations, the most recent one is that it was a way to manifest against fascism in Franco times, the church being allied to political power. Before that also a way against "Holy Inquisition" power...
Traditional but not very elegant anyway.
Italians have a "sporca madona empestata" and "dio cantante", maybe it comes from a similar reaction to church power?

Interesting alternative explanations =)

And because we now have opened the Pandora's box of political topics, I would like to share the idea I learned from my tutors. Whatever we study from social science point of view, it is good to consider the following four aspects:

1) "Culture", which is more or less about habits and traditions how people behave.

2) "Technology", which is the ways how some individuals come up with in trying to make things easier (e.g. hammer instead of a rock).

3) "Commerce", in form of exchange of goods and/or make profit.

4) "Governance", that is based either on rational or irrational laws for the common or elite interest. Governance based on political debate is usually trying to be rational, whereas governance based on religions is often nothing but irrational politics. Although, some religious "laws" do have some rational bases, like "do not kill".

An example: People like to communicate. Some guy invents a radio in order to make it possible to communicate further away. Another guy comes up with an idea to make profit out of it, and starts selling radios to everyone. Then at some point everyone are "yelling" at the same time and only those who yell loud enough probably get their voice heard (but maybe not listened). Then comes politics, national laws, international laws, patents, and all kinds of governance that tries to get some order on all of that. Although, some politics only tries to achieve their personal interest, and keep on yelling over others...

Although, there are also those (maybe artists) who mock all of that and tries to make us see how insane that all can be =D

The last ones are my mates... even if I am not an artist. When I was young I still had the ideal that we could change something, I fought actively for that and paid an high price.
Son after I realized that, even with the right of vote, people's power was an illusion, power is always in the hand of an elite, money is power and religions are the richest... at least in my Peninsula.
Democracy appears to me more and more like an illusion, a political correct mask behind which the same type of dictatorship hides to rule the world even better and for their exclusive profit.
Now I am a desperate bystander, looking hands tied and eyes wide open to a world whose values I do not always understand, whose insanity I cannot change...
I just try to do my best to help around me and act accordingly to my ideas of respect for mother earth and creatures surviving on it.

Yes, unfortunately there hardly is such thing as "common interest". There's always some greedy elite, that thinks only their personal interest. And the highest price to pay falls on mother earth because it no longer can't fight back against such a strong force as our carbon footprint can be =(
