RIP G12

RIP G12
Farewell my beloved G12! You served me well. Although, I'm a little disappointed our contract lasted only for two years. I regret treating you too harshly, why I already once had to get you cleaned at the camera repairs shop. And now you finally stopped working entirely, supposedly because one of your electric cables broke out of heavy use. I'm sorry but I can't afford to keep you alive any longer =(

, ColRam, .t.a.o.n., have particularly liked this photo

what is the error?
I'm almost sure your problem is with the counter.
Once it hits a certain amount of pictures the camera ceases.
You have to send it to get rolled back.
(it's crazy right?)
I've done this twice with my G11 and I have to do it again.
I'll find the address (it's in Texas) and post it.
They are much cheaper than sending it to Canon.

I don't think the solution is that easy. Here's what I was able to find on this issue:

What exactly causes this issue on Canon G12 is very likely the same what happened to my friend Wertti (Ipernity account name 'wierd'). There is sort of a manufacture error on some G series cameras. The cable that goes to lens/zoom motor is very very thin, and lens barrel edges are sharp, and therefore by the time the lens barrel edge will just cut that thin cable.

And we do have camera repairs shops even here in Tampere, FInland ;-) As I said in the caption, I already had to get the camera cleaned last summer. It cost me around 200 euros. Moreover, the "camera smith" told me about the possible lens error when I asked about it. He said it will be also rather expensive to fix it.

I could of course take my camera to this local camera smith, but even diagnose will cost something, just as would if I post it somewhere else, even abroad. EDIT: Just called to service, and diagnose will cost 45 euros.

Nevertheless, thank you for the advice =) If you still think that is the reason, then maybe this local guy can fix that as well.

well I'll let you know what happens with my G11. (when I get the money)

if this is a problem with the G12 I may not purchase one in the future.
I think of all of the G series the G9 was the most durable.
I carried that thing in my coat pocket everywhere I went.

The reason I suggested this place in Texas is that they specialize in the G series.
I'm sure Finland has excellent photo shops. : )

And thank you very much for the suggestion, D. =) This local guy also seems to be quite an expert with Canon G series cameras. I consider letting him to do the last judgement, and pay 45 euros for that. But then that would be 45 euros less to invest on totally new camera ;-)

That is ridiculous. A camera should last more than two years before wearing out. How frustrating for you.

Unfortunately familiar problem, I hope my G12 will last still for a while. But if this is a typical G problem I might switch to another one. I am thinking about writing to Canon and see what they will answer.

Wertti, have a look at Nikon Coolpix P7800: www.nikon.fi/fi_FI/product/digital-cameras/coolpix/brilliant-performance/coolpix-p7800

That is 2013 model, and no idea if they will continue that line, but currently it is somewhat only G12 like "compact camera" with fully rotating display.

somewhat yes, even 7x zoom, the prize about the same, but the very important thing for me is the quality of the colors etc.
For that I like the G12 very much
