The Laundry Rooms & 2 PiPs.

The Laundry Rooms & 2 PiPs.
The laundry rooms in the courtyard of Kingston Lacy House ~ It is nice to see the wonderful paintings by Rubens and Titian inside the house, and the opulence of that time, but the family could not exist without an army of hard working servants, and the laundry must have been one of the most demanding and physical jobs of all.

There are two PiPs that may be of interest in the bottom left picture showing the mangle box..

Istvan Farkas, Frans Schols, Andrea Ertl, Erhard Bernstein and 28 other people have particularly liked this photo

Amazing !
Never ever heard of such a "device"...
It is very clever, physical side apart, but it should very demanding to operate.
One never knows how it was until ...
Thank you for the explanation.

Thank you Jose. It was new to me as well, but must have
taken some muscle to operate! Good evening.

I love this collage Rosa...............you've chosen a perfect set of linked together photos to display, each one captured beautifully. It just shows the ingenuity of the people that thought up and built all these gadgets.

Thanks for including the notes in the PiPs. The two that really catch my interest is the two mangles - the ordinary one and the box mangle (which seems essentially to be an ironing machine!

Wouldn't it be interesting if we could go back in time and show them the machines we have nowadays to do the same jobs.

You really are good at getting these internal images.........something I find really difficult!

Rosalyn Hilborne club has replied to Keith Burton club
Thank you so much for your great comments Keith. For all the ingenuity, it was still darn hard work! The box mangle was a first for me. It must have taken quite some effort to use it.

Yes, it would be very interesting to go back in time, as long as there was a way back ;-)
Did you ever see the time travel comedy with Nicholas Lyndhurst called "Goodnight Sweetheart"? I would love to be able to do that!!

Thanks again for your very kind comment Keith.

The laundry rooms back then definitely looked a lot more picturesque than nowadays. But still...I'm glad I have a modern washer and don't have to do backbreaking laundry like they had to years ago.

An interesting historical collage, Rosa.

Rosalyn Hilborne club has replied to Edna Edenkoben club
Can you imagine the steam in there though Edna and the irons were heated by the fire and so hot to handle.....I'm with you! Thank goodness for automatic washing machines! A nice old Singer sewing machine though.

Thank you Edna and good evening.
Edna Edenkoben club has replied to Rosalyn Hilborne club
It's hard to imagine for our generation.
And yes, a nice old Singer sewing machine. I'm terrible at sewing though, but my mom used to sew beautiful dresses for the family. Sewing was just a hobby of hers, but she was really good at it. I guess she was trained by my grandma who was a professional seamstress.

Have a nice evening, Rosa!

A nice collection of modern appliances although I would think the sewing machine is later. Life was hard for the servants but depending on the family for many it was better than they could expected in a village or town they had accommodation and regular meals and a chance of promotion, the larger houses were self contained everything that was needed was available on the estate
12 months ago.
Rosalyn Hilborne club has replied to Peter Castell club
Yes I think you are right about the sewing machine Peter. The staff needed a good family to have a good life in service. I'm sure there were some and some.

Those were the days when the laundry took at least 24 hours to complete. I don't know how long it takes these days. I rarely have any contact with our army of staff. ;-)))))
