Bratton Camp & Westbury White Horse

Bratton Camp & Westbury White Horse
The original Iron Age hillfort defences were built at Bratton Camp over 2000 years ago. These earthworks protected a settlement containing round houses, granaries, stores and workshops. The site was excavated in the 18th century. However, three thousand years earlier a Neolithic long barrow existed on this hill, and later excavations in the 19th century uncovered human skeletons and cremations.

Beautifully composed landscape. I like the way you have included the white horse and the path winding along the hillside. Nice PiP's too. I like the Dulux dog. They are so friendly and remind me of a friend's Beardies who are quite similar in appearance.

Thank you very much Jean. The white horse should be chalk but they decided concrete would be easier to maintain! I think it looks awful and definitely needs a clean. The good walks and views make up for it though. Yes, a gorgeous friendly dog.

Concrete ! In my opinion that's vandalism !

A great aerial perspective, Rosa. I love the fact the middle ground looks like a gigantic patchwork quilt. Cheers, Joe

Lovely images, Rosa and it's good to see the white horse there. With views like that, I can see why it appealed in earlier times as a defensive site.

Wow! Such a fantastic view from up there............I've seen the white horse from a distance, but I've never been up close to it like this. The patchwork of fields in the middle distance is just lovely and the beautiful blue sky tops it all of nicely.

I love the dog...........it must be very hot under all that fur! I also like the couple sunbathing and enjoying the view..........just perfect.

Can you get anywhere near this by car............or is it a bit of a walk?
Rosalyn Hilborne club has replied to Keith Burton club
It was the perfect weather for a trip there Keith. It is much higher than it looks in my pictures and some of the walks are along narrow steep sided ridges, so you wouldn't want too much wind. I was very nervous but I actually walked them!!

The dog was having a great time with so many admirers. I wanted to bring him home :-))

The car park is right there at the top Keith and always plenty of room. I love the steep drive up to it but it is a very narrow road with passing places. There is usually an ice-cream van as well. Had a very welcome 99!

Thanks Rosa, I have seen the White Horse countless times but shamefully have never visited it.

So it was very nive to enjoy your pictures. Shame about the concrete though!

Rosalyn Hilborne club has replied to Nick Weall club
It was years before I actually visited the site Nick. Like you, I had seen it from afar many times. Yes it is a shame about the concrete. Now that English Heritage care for the site, I hope they will eventually put it back to how it should be.

Bratton Camp is also thought by some to be the site of King Alfred the Great's defeat of the vikings at the Battle of Ethandun. This is entirely possible; Edington (Ethandun) lies under the escarpment not far from Bratton Camp.
It has also been said (many times) that if Alfred had lost this battle we would all be speaking Danish!
Lovely shots, Rosa!

I remember many conversations on Panoramio about this site and Edington, where there is a beautiful church and lots of information. I had intended to visit it again on Sunday, but spent so much time at the Camp, so will save that for another day. Pen Selwood was another important site for Alfred. Many thanks for your interest and kind comments.

Rosalyn Hilborne club has replied to Peter Castell club
Sunday's weather made it the perfect day out Peter. There were people there but plenty of room and many public footpaths, so didn't seem at all crowded.
Hope you have a good week too Peter.

Hi Rosa

I like this very much. It says so much more about the day than just a picture of the horse could.

I remember visiting there many years ago, but no photos I'm afraid..

I also seem to remember a story about some girls from a local (very posh) school visiting there in the middle of the night and making a 'creative addition' to the sculpture..

Best Wishes, and stay safe!!
Peter

Hi Peter,
There are some beautiful walks up there and so interesting geologically. I don't remember that about the girls creative addition, but I'm sure you're right :-)
Take care, best wishes,
Rosa.
