Longleat Lion

Longleat Lion
One from the archives. Longleat House, the ancestral home of Alexander Thynn, 7th Marquess of Bath who died this month aged 87 after contracting the coronavirus. A very colourful and eccentric character!

Cämmerer zu Nau, Ernest CH, Istvan Farkas, menonfire and 33 other people have particularly liked this photo

Great composiiton. I like the positioning of the statue and the lighting on the house, especially the different colours. A cracking night time image Rosa.

It was sad to hear of his passing...............he was certainly a character, one of our true eccentrics.

Thank you Keith. Taken at The Festival of Light, which was fantastic.

It is sad way to go, and he was definitely a one off true eccentric!

I went to the Rolling Stone's concert at Longleat on Sunday 2nd August 1964 saw a girl dancing in the fountain who I didn't know but who some years later became my wife. I later briefly meet Alexander's father in an antique shop in Beckington opposite where I was renting a house from the garage owner at the T junction with the Warminster Rd, There was a pub on the corner, I forget its name now.. The garage was set on fire a few months later as a lorry drove straight into it from the Warminster Rd. I was in Frome at the time and when I returned the road was blocked but the police let me through when I told the policeman that my pregnant wife was in the house next door. She was OK but the house got a little warm. Happy days :)

I remember that you went to see The Rolling Stone's there, but I love the rest of your story! So did you get to know the girl in the fountain that evening, or later on?? The pub in Beckington is The Woolpack Nick. It must have been quite a shock to see the garage on fire, and you must have been especially worried about your wife!! Great memories :-))

Terrific night shot. I like the colours and the lion in the foreground. I was sad to hear of the Marquis of Bath's death, especially of coronavirus. He was a real character and deserved a better end.

Thank you Jean. Yes a sad end. I used to see him shopping in Yeovil in the 1980's, always dressed in his usual way!

Presumably lighting up for the Christmas season Rosalyn, superb light and a good statue of the lion. Eccentric character! is about right but what a great service he did for this country and to wild life in general.

Rosalyn Hilborne club has replied to HappySnapper
It was at the Festival of Light which they hold every year now and is absolutely brilliant. His son Lord Weymouth has been running the estate for a long time and is much less eccentric, but doing a good job. I remember when Lord Bath's father used to take money on the gate!

Terrific composition Rosa, the lion fairly leaps out of the scene. Love the lighting of the house and the presence of all those people in the more shadowed area. Same about the death of the Marquess, one of England's true characters and a gentleman.

All the best, Doug
