Moreton Church ~ Flower Festival

Moreton Church ~ Flower Festival
St Nicholas Church, Moreton, Dorset ~ Two PiP's.....One showing the church, which I have posted before but promised to take a picture of the controversial window when I visited again. It depicts Judas, the betrayer of Christ, the disciple who the gospels relate hanged himself in shame after throwing away the 30 pieces of silver he was paid for his treachery.

It is the creation of the glass artist Laurence Whistler, and it was finally installed 14 years after Whistler's death and almost 30 years after the parishioners, appalled at the subject and the strangeness of the image, rejected his valuable gift.

The window cannot be viewed from inside the church. The dark window is more startling because the interior of the church is flooded with light. All the clear glass windows are the spectacular work of Whistler, depicting butterflies, birds, rabbits, wild flowers, candles, stars and planets and local scenes.

Tanja - Loughcrew, Ulrich John, ColRam, Fred Fouarge and 23 other people have particularly liked this photo

Thank you Amelia. It is so strange that you cannot see the window from inside. Before I knew it was blocked off, I was looking for it!

A fabulous series with the light filled main photo and the spectacular Judas window. A good thing that they installed the window after all, I find it fascinating but can easily see why it has taken the locals some time gettiing used to it...

Yes, I am glad it was eventually installed. The work that went into it is amazing and the other windows in the church are spectacular. They let so much more light in than stained glass, which most churches have. Many thanks for your kind comments.

All the pictures are beautiful Rosa, but my favourite is Juda's window, which is a masterpiece (throwing away the 30 silver coins!!) and which you have taken so well! I cannot understand why the parishioners first rejected it...beauty is beauty and after all, Judas's tragical story may be seen as a warning, in my modest opinion. The main picture too shows the elegance of this church cathedral ...I like so much the way you composed the image and of course the flowers...a perfect trio Rosa, congrats!

Thank you Adele. It is spectacular if a little shocking and unexpected. It is very difficult to take a photo, as the ground slopes away and the angle is not good with the sun shining on it. The church is in a very small village and in those days maybe they thought it would keep people away, but it has done the opposite! Thank you so much for your interest and kind comments.

A wonderful series of images Rosa, with a fascinating story. I love the main exterior shot of the church, the perspective and light are spot on. The picture showing the 'offending' window I like because of the reflections of the trees and light and the shadows of the leaded glass partitions around the main window. The clear glass window shown in your fine interior shot is looks interesting, did you manage take any closer shots of it? Thanks for the interesting notes, they help explain much!

I think the architecture of the church is quite unusual and the windows certainly attract a lot of visitors, although not many seem to know about the Judas window and it comes as a surprise, if they even notice it, as it is quite dark because of the backing to prevent it from being seen inside!
I have taken some pictures of the other windows on a previous occasion. I will leave a link below. The light was completely wrong for any decent shots this time. Thank you for your kind comments and interest. Regards, Rosa.

An excellent set of images . The church itself is quite unusual and very beautiful. I love the way you've captured it with the grave markers in the foreground and it looks spectacular against the blue sky.

The interior shots are really lovely too..............especially the Judas Window, which I really like for much the same reasons as Doug! The main image is particularly well exposed.

I also followed the link you left for Doug............the engraved windows are stunning!

Great work Rosa.

Yes indeed it is Joe. It is not easy to see the window clearly with the sloping ground and the light. I expect that was the intention though. Many thanks for your kind comment. Cheers, Rosa.
