The Wobbly Hedge!

The Wobbly Hedge!
The Wobbly hedge was planted in the 1850's at Montacute House and the unusual bumpy shape of the yews was caused by heavy snowfall in the winter of 1947, which caused it to collapse under the weight. It grew back naturally in this abstract shape. It was featured in Ang Lee's 1995 adaptation of "Sense and Sensibility".

There are some wonderful examples of wobbly yew hedges at Powys castle, Rosa. Well worth a visit especially as you're a NT member, and it's not far from Shrewsbury.

A very good idea Amelia but I'm afraid it will have to be another time as we have a full timetable already....I just do as my daughter says :) Time for a coffee with you though! Cheers, Rosa.

Thank you John. I think the mist has definitely added to the picture. I was there once when they were trimming it...quite a difficult job! .....Rosa.

The hard winter of 47 was serendipitous then! I really like the 'wobblyness' of this hedge. Very nice shot too!
