Newhaven in East Sussex is our local port. It has a regular ferry service to Dieppe in France - twice a day in winter, three times in summer. There are a couple of freight quays used by vessels trading in scrap metal and aggregates. On the west side there are fishing boat jetties, a lifeboat station and a small marina.

Another photo of the work being done to improve the harbour facilities at Newhaven, ready for servicing the construction and maintenance of the Rampion off-shore wind farm. The bucket did not seem to be bringing up anything but water. They were working with a fairly high tide, so I wonder whether the bucket was actually reaching the bottom.
It is not clear whether the cut being made in this photo is the start of the hull's scrapping or relates to the removal of some of the internal parts attached to that section of hull.
12.7.2014 - It's now clear that this was the start of the removal of a squarish piece of the hull, extending down to the lowest visible horizontal rib and back to where the deck is shown in this shot. I took more photos today which will show the current condition.
2.5.2020 This work was never finished as these photos taken in 2019 show. It was still in that condition a couple of months ago. www.ipernity.com/doc/philsutters/49915746
