This is a preserved steam locomotive, modified to be allowed on the current railway system, hauling a special service for enthusiasts from London to Hastings, via Lewes and back via Tonbridge.

Many of the people in this photograph are too young to have memories of steam locomotives in regular daily use. Thanks to the Thomas the Tank Engine children's books there is a lot of affection for steam railway engines.
