Two trucks one dozer and lots of shingle - Seaford - 3.12.2015

Two trucks one dozer and lots of shingle - Seaford - 3.12.2015
Our beach only has a couple of breakwaters to stop the protective bank of shingle moving about. So after high tides in rough weather the shingle has to be moved from the ends of the beach, where it has collected against the breakwaters, to the middle that has become exposed. This is apparently more cost-effective than building breakwaters. There are currently at least four big articulated dumper trucks, a bulldozer and a bucket loader working on this all day.

.. lots of work

.. reminds me of Florida when the Gulf Beaches on Anna Maria Island needed 'renourishment'
.. business owners could participate, of course they had to pay
.. those who did not participate, soon regretted it
.. hurricanes will take your sand -- don't care who you are -- but at least some lost less amounts than those 'saving money'
.. next time around -- they participated !

Fortunately the Government pay through the Envirorment Agency. That's great for our town, but they now plan to put protective defences in only where there are houses or businesses at risk. So the neighbouring valley, Cuckmere Haven, may be left to go back to nature rather than have its shingle bank repaired each year. There are famous loops called meanders in the old river course and over time they may become worn away by the tides, if there is no shingle. You can see what I mean if you look at online aerial maps of Cuckmere Haven. There are four former coastguard cottages, but they are not considered at risk, as they have their own defences and are up the hill a bit.

The shingle shifters spend several weeks each year moving the pebbles about. How many times and for how long depends on how severe the storms are.

Either I missed it when I looked through Explore, earlier today, or it's gone on very recently. Thanks again for your comments, Jaap.
