Added to the Vintage Photos Theme Park, for the 'Taken unawares' theme, as it is clearly an unposed picture.. This was taken by my grandfather, who an electrical engineer, installing power supplies, in the British barracks at Abbassia, near Cairo. I am not sure whether the maidens were distressed before taking part in the race.Judging by the men hastening to them, there was concern for their well-being at this point.
Greetings for the festive season to all who follow this group!

I can't make this out. Is it a camel race? Are the maidens riding on the camels?
And why are those men in suits running towards them?
Very strange and intriguing!

All I have is the pencilled note on the back which forms the caption. It was part of the Imperial Camel Corps annual gymkhana. If you look through the album, you will see an egg & spoon race on camels, the V.C.race, in which men mounted on camels had to rescue 'injured' comrades lying on the ground in sacks and I think there was also camel-mounted wrestling, as well as straight-forward camel racing. All that happening under the bemused gaze of the local population.
