Polk Theatre 10 -- steps / stairs .. please read explanation

- an explanation of these stairs in this Historic Theatre .. "The swastika symbol is extremely polarising in the United States, although the First Amendment to the United States Constitution protects most uses of it. Many older buildings, built before the swastika became associated with Nazism, have swastikas built into their architectural decorations. Some of these building are listed in the National Register of Historic Places. .. The swastika (from Sanskrit svástika) is an equilateral cross with its arms bent at right angles, in either right-facing (卐) form or its mirrored left-facing (卍) form. Archaeological evidence of swastika-shaped ornaments dates from the Neolithic period and was first found in the Indus Valley Civilization of the Indian subcontinent. The swastika (gammadion, "fylfot") symbol became (as it had long been in the Asian World) a popular symbol of luck in the Western world in the early 20th century. Although the Nazi Party adopted the symbol in the 1920s, it continued in use in Western countries with its original meaning until the Nazi association became dominant in the 1930s. The term swastika is first attested in English in 1871. , it first refers to the Nazi emblem in 1932. " - from Wikipedia Something used as a symbol of 'luck' was turned into a symbol of hate ... many buildings have the swastika in or on them. I remember at one time, these stairs were carpeted to hide the symbol. ..SKB Productions www.polktheatre.org
