The i360 is an observation pod which rises 140m above the Promenade in Brighton. It was designed by Marks Barfield Architects, the group which was also responsible for the London Eye.

It's fair to say that the City Council have not received the return on the investment which they expected. However, with a 25-minute trip costing most of us £16.50, its hardly surprising.

More like pie in the sky by the sound of it. Seems to me, from yours and Phil’s descriptions, that the view “of” the tower is more interesting than the view “from” the tower.

It was certainly the reflections which captured my interest; I'm sure that, with a bit of planning, something a little more interesting could be reflected!

I would like to take a ride up there to get a fresh perspective, but they are going to have to reduce the fare quite considerably before I'm tempted.

I went up in the wheel that preceded the i360. That wasn't brilliant as you sat facing the people opposite you in the capsule, so the view was between them along the coast or past them to either end - out to sea or into the city. Fortunately I and two grandchildren didn't have to pay as we were the guests of a neighbour, who had won the use of an eight-seater capsule in a local paper competition.

Thanks very much - it's an odd-looking thing, but does present worthwhile photo opportunities (if nothing else!).
