An attempt to see how far I could go in isolating a detail without losing all meaningful definition. (Time weighs heavy in isolation, doesn't it? There's only so much sourdough one man can bake.)

The PiP shows the original picture of the MY Bob Barker owned by the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society, moored at the time in Hobart, Tasmania after trailing the whalers in the Southern Ocean in April 2011.

Comments and criticisms as to whether the objective is worth the effort will be gratefully received and considered.

I think this is a creditable result, but i am a lover of shadow and even near-total blackness for the sake of contrast and startling effect. I blame the Lightroom software. It has opened up possibilities never before possible. Your crop from the original photograph is possibly too severe to achieve a really strong result, but the activity is worth persisting with. As for the isolation: that too is worth persisting with. The alternative is best avoided. At least we can surf the internet which was not an option in earlier pestilences.

I take your point about the severity of the crop, but that was part of the challenge I'd set myself, viz. to see how much I could reduce the crop and still be able to retain (or re-create) definition. The definition was re-created as much as possible using an on-line app called imglarger, which had the advantage of being free for trial purposes and gave results that not even Lightroom could achieve. If I were doing something important then I would perhaps crop differently. Good fun, though. Thanks for taking the time to comment in depth.

I'd count this a total success, in the sense that if you'd wanted a 'record' the original image covered the need: if you wanted something with an abstract and graphic feeling, you've achieved it well.

Thank you, George. This was never meant to replace the original picture, of course. I liked the idea of the circle, the rectangle of the window and the diagonal of the railing all working together. It doesn't work perfectly, but it was a start and a most enjoyable (though occasionally frustrating) exercise.

The window ends up being enigmatic enough that I wouldn't have figured out what it was without looking at the PiP. I think this is why the crop feels so abstract.

Many thanks, O small venomous one (assuming you have blue rings as well as blue arms). The abstract quality of the window is a happy side effect. Because I knew what it was (viz. a window) it didn't occur to me to look at it from a perspective such as yours. Thanks for your visit and perceptive comment. Fun this, innit?

Yes, it is. I recently cropped the hell out of an old negative myself and was much happier with the result than I was with the original: www.ipernity.com/doc/bro/49880474

I'll take some of that sourdough off your hands if you're overburdened, Old Owl. Very good use of time on that photo, anyway!

... it works; and a painting-like effect ...

... on the original in PiP -- I like the geometric clutter in the upper left quadrant; and also, in the upper right corner, the more simplistic exhaust stack against the red vertically stripey background ...
