Southsea Street Art

Southsea Street Art
Another fantastic piece of artwork by local Southsea artist "My Dog Sighs".

This is on the wall of what used to be a huge Knight and Lee department store (and as it says on the wall, a branch of the John Lewis Partnership) which sadly, closed with a huge loss of jobs. It was one of two "flagship" stores in the shopping centre (the other being Debenhams, also closed down). I suspect both will soon be demolished and turned into housing.

The artist has a great sense of colour and a good humour Keith
Well seen and captured! It deserves to be saved in the event of demolition.
Nice one !

Glad you like this one Roger..........he's probably my favourite artist of all the local ones around here (and there are quite a few)!

I'm hoping it will survive.........it's painted on a sheet of wood which has been nailed across a large window, so it should be easy to take down and keep.

It would sell for a lot of money.............he's become more and more commercial over the past few years.

It's a great idea to build housing when there's no commercial activity!

Keith Burton club has replied to Typo93 club
I quite agree Typo...........but the main reason the commercial activity has reduced is that the two "flagship" stores that closed down were the ones attracting people to the shopping centre!!

This is probably my favourite artist from the art you show us Keith. This is superb. Such a shame that all the big department stores have closed. I really miss them.

Mine too Rosa............he's a genius! This one has was done a few weeks back, but this was first chance to photograph it. He has quite a following on Facebook and I use that to track down his new stuff.

The department stores were essential to the area, and it's really struggling without them. The large Debenhams store in nearby Portsmouth city centre has gone now as well :-)

Thanks for your nice comments and have a good weekend.

They have left a big hole in Salisbury and Weymouth as well Keith, and Denner's, later Beale's is a huge loss to Yeovil.

This is such a pleasure to look at Keith, I too hope it escapes the demolition.

We only have ourselves to blame - online buying is killing shops and the pleasure of seeing true colours and feeling textures, perfumery smells as you enter the store; how have we allowed ourselves to become so divorced from our senses and detached from emotion; it makes me think of W.H.Davies' poem;

What is this life if, full of care,
We have no time to stand and stare.

No time to stand beneath the boughs
And stare as long as sheep or cows.

No time to see, when woods we pass,
Where squirrels hide their nuts in grass.

No time to see, in broad daylight,
Streams full of stars, like skies at night.

No time to turn at Beauty's glance,
And watch her feet, how they can dance.

No time to wait till her mouth can
Enrich that smile her eyes began.

A poor life this is if, full of care,
We have no time to stand and stare.

I can't argue with that Maggie...........and I think we're all a bit guilty of it........along with high business rates and shop rentals and the rising costs of what seems like everything..!!

My own town Havant is full of charity shops, nail bars, barber shops, take-away shops and estate agents and the whole place has an air of depression. It's dirty and unloved and the council have no money..!! It used to be such a lovely little town........but now I won't even go there on my own in the dark..!!

Thanks for sharing the poem, which I vaguely remember from my school days........a very long time ago!
