I don't think it's part of a curtain pole...........the bottom is unmarked and as well finished as the rest............and it would be far to small.

Thanks Roger. I suspect that it's purely decorative, or maybe a wood-turner's demonstration piece.

I think it's a tool for darning . We used to have a very inferior tool like that when I was young. It was used on socks with holes in the heels and toes. You pulled the sock over it until the heel was over the mushroom top. I could be wrong as the top of yours is quite pointy and most darning mushrooms and eggs are flatter. It's a very beautiful object whatever it is. The wood is so lovely and you've done it justice.

I thought that at first Jean (I can remember having to darn my own socks when I first joined the RN), but I don't think it is. The top is very small - only around 3cm in diameter and as you say, quite pointy. This image shows it at about two and a half times life size!

I agree though, that it's very beautiful and lovely to hold and look at. Glad you like it too.

Es könnte ein Kreisel sein, also mit der Spitze nach unten. Zum Drehen mit den Fingern müsste die Achse einen kleineren Durchmesser haben. Oder es ist ein Fadenkreisel. Ein Faden wird auf die Achse unter dem Pilzkopf gewickelt. Der große Fuss dient als Gegengewicht. Das Gleichgewicht liegt in der Kerbe mit dem Faden. Zieht man schnell am Faden, so rotiert das Kreisel.

I would say, it's a tool for darning! On the other hand these tools are rounded and have no peak.

Oh yes it's definitely a thingummyjig Keith! ;-) I think it is too pointed for a darning mushroom. My late mother-in-law had many but then she did have 11 children! Still a mystery then. Let us know if you solve it!

P.S. Could it be something to do with spinning, as in cotton/wool spinning wheels?

My first thought also was a darning help but the point is a bit sharp. Whatever it is, it's beautifully turned and you photographed it perfectly with a matching background.
