Old chestnut tree

Old chestnut tree
P1000253
The sweet chestnut was introduced into Europe from Sardis, in Asia Minor; the fruit was then called the Sardian nut.
It has been a staple food in southern Europe, Turkey, and southwestern and eastern Asia for millennia, largely replacing cereals where these would not grow well, if at all, in mountainous Mediterranean areas.
Evidence of its cultivation by man is found since around 2000 BC.
Alexander the Great and the Romans planted chestnut trees across Europe while on their various campaigns.
A Greek army is said to have survived their retreat from Asia Minor in 401–399 BC thanks to their stores of chestnuts.
Some of these trees in the picture are more than one thousand years old.

Fantásticos ejemplares de castaños. En España en torno a Liébana y Potes (Cantabria) hay también bosques de castaños centenarios tan antiguos como esos.

They are wonderful trees- and the chestnuts are a delight! I must admit to buying them boiled and peeled in vacuum packs;-)

Never mind, you like them and that is the point. Fresh from the tree they do not last very long depending on the variety (there are currently more than 12 different species) and the longer lasting ones don't maintain their qualities more than about 2/3 months. They catch parasites and rot very easily unless they have been treated with chemicals and that nobody wants to do that. So eat them frozen, at least they are free of bactericides.
