It is an amazing complex, and was quite open when we were there (2000). John was there also in 1989. The clamp down on Tibetan areas has really intensified, as, of course, the Uighurs too. We were in Kashgar during that time too…stillessentially a mudbrick traditional city of the Silk Road. Parts of the old town were still quite mediaeval.
L’a rang was in the middle of a festival while we were there, with pilgrims who looked as if they had stepped out from 100 years before.
My photos were reasonably limited..pre digital, travelling for some months by bus and train with a rucksack made film a precious commodity, so you could not just bang off a volley of shots.
I loved those wild times!

I believe the 2000 must've been the most relaxed period. This was not very long after 2008 so you may imagine. Xinjiang big plans have been only in plans, but a lot of news about the terrorism in there. Was it true or pre planned media strategy?
