Conjunction Junction

Conjunction Junction
There was a conjunction of the Moon and the planet Jupiter tonight and this shot is from about an hour ago, just after the sky had gotten good and dark. Jupiter is just below and slightly to the right of the Moon. You can also see three of Jupiter's moons as well.

For the Saturday Self-Challenge group, whose theme this week was "Deep Depth Of Field." The Moon is 238,855 miles away from Earth, while Jupiter is approximately 600 million miles away from Earth. Since both the Moon and Jupiter are in sharp focus, there is 600 million miles worth of depth of field. I doubt anyone else in the challenge this week has more depth of field than that!

I thought of this idea almost immediately this past Sunday, when I heard what the challenge subject was going to be; but I had to wait until tonight, just before the time to post my entry, before I could even take my picture. It stormed and was cloudy until about 7 p.m., so I'm sure glad the skies cleared up or I wouldn't have had an entry!

Oh, yeah: Conjunction Junction.

Roger Bennion, Gudrun, Gillian Everett, Xata and 7 other people have particularly liked this photo

This is a shot I took of Jupiter last night as a test for this week's challenge. You can only see two of it's moons here:

I did have a persistent lone, long cloud as well, and it was tracking from west to east and was directly over the Moon and Jupiter. I had to shoot during small breaks in the cloud. But I got lucky and there were a few breaks, fortunately.

Sorry to hear about your cloud cover. It's always disappointing to miss an event you've been looking forward to.

All right, here is that data:

Camera: Sony Alpha SLT-a77v
Lens: Minolta AF Zoom 70-210mm, f/4.5, @ 210mm (Minolta A-mount)
Shooting Program: Manual
ISO: 200
Aperture: f/8
Shutter Speed: 1/125 of a second
Date: August 9th, 2019, 8.46 p.m.
Location: Outer Space

I exposed for the Moon and Jupiter together in the frame, and then in post-processing, lightened up the moons of Jupiter a little so that they would show better. I shot it with a film camera as well, but I have to finish the roll before I can develop it. I used a 1000mm lens with that camera, so maybe it got more detail of Jupiter.

Obrigada Kenneth, you did a great job and exifs are always very instructive.
I have a 27" pro apple screen (retina, customized for image work, etc...) and viewing your picture in wide is a great moment!

An awe-inspiring photo, Kenny. Even more awe-inpsiring when viewed on black! And, 600 million miles worth of depth of field is impressive and then some :-)
