Chimneys, Fence & pip,

Chimneys, Fence & pip,
Vicar's Close in Wells, Somerset, is claimed to be the oldest purely residential street with original buildings surviving intact in Europe. These houses were built in the 14th and early 15th centuries and the close owes its origins to a grant of land and buildings by Walter de Hulle, a canon of Wells Cathedral, (Wikipedia)
Whilst taking these images I listened to beautiful music played on a violin emitting from an open window originating from what I assume was the adjacent music school,
As a point of interest, the houses " line each side of a quadrangle which appears longer than it is because of false perspective achieved by building the houses at the upper northern end nearest the chapel 9 feet (2.7 m) closer together than those at the lower southern end " (Wiki)

PiP shows chimney detail and some deterioration of the stone work.

Shot in 16.9 so a large view would be appreciated,

Link to the Wikipedia page, (Thank you Janet )

Wonderful photograph and documentary Roger, very interesting. I love those chimney stacks and an empty street with minimal lighting. I also like the young lad who seems to be absorbed in his mobile as the mid way point of interest. Well taken Roger.

Each house as it is now has two chimneys as you can see from my father's photo www.ipernity.com/doc/philsutters/48708942 At the time we lived in that house, in the early 1950s, he was Chaplain to Wells Theological College, subsequently absorbed by the Theological College at Salisbury, and the house was allocated to us as part of his remuneration. There were five of us living there, but I cannot remember the layout. As part of his duties he took services in the little chapel at the end of the Close. A fair number of the houses at that time were used as lodgings for the College's students. Others were occupied by college and cathedral staff.
They were originally built as pairs of one up, one down dwellings for the Vicars Choral - the cathedral's adult male choristers, hence the name Vicar's Close.
The house to the left is the only one that has been substantially enlarged. as you can see from Dad's photo there are further more modern chimney stacks to the rear.

I assume from this that the house with the dormer window is the enlarged property, do you know if it was converted specifically for a family ? Thanks for the interesting information Phil.
Phil Sutters club has replied to Roger (Grisly) club
I don't have any information about the history of the Close and the various properties in it. I don't know when the dormer was inserted. I would think that it was some time ago as I don't see that get listed building consent in recent years. No.14, next to our house, appears to have be connected to the buildings behind the close. That area now seems to have been redeveloped for housing. In the past some of that area would have been the Deanery garden, where my mother had an allotment! Our house didn't have access to that directly. She had to go round there under the Vicars' Hall and along the edge of the Cathedral Green to the gateway into the Deanery.
Above the Chapel is a room which described as a library. I remember it being used as a vestry. I remember my father having to descend the narrow spiral stone staircase, in his vestments and carrying the sacred vessels, the chalice & patten. One had to go very cautiously.

I really enjoyed looking at this image and thinking about its history. Loved the inset too. Makes me wonder how it avoided getting blown up during the war? (Silly American, I don't know the history of bombings)

Thank you Janet, I had images in the camera before the lad came from one of the houses and decided that he added something to the image (if only size perspective) re the bombings few smaller places we damaged mainly the larger cities,

I've seen quite a few versions of this fascinating place.............and this is up there with the best!

I love the contrasting light and dark sides of the close.........and the long shadows encroaching on the light side. The detail you've captured is fantastic and I like the young lad in the shot. I'd never heard of the "false perspective" trick before...........how clever of the architects and planners!

Definitely my fave Fence Friday shot of the week, if not the year! The only thing that irks me is that dormer in the roof on the right hand side - it really looks out of place. I wonder how they got permission for that?

HFF Roger.................have a super weekend.
4 years ago. Edited 4 years ago.
Roger (Grisly) club has replied to Keith Burton club
Thank you for the excellent comments Keith, it looks to be a very old lead covered dormer probably from the time when the church was all powerful and planing permission was irrelevant .

I have never been there, but you have now sold me the idea!!!

I am sure others have taken this picture, it is so tempting, but I doubt if any are as nice as this one. Great respect for not photoshopping that dormer window out of it though!
