SWA now Namibia

SWA now Namibia
We crossed the Namib Desert in a Mercedes(without air-conditioning) and lost hub caps and the undercarriage was sandblasted. It was a truly amazing journey.

We saw a few animals including gemsbok, springbok, not to mention a cheetah.

It was really parched at the time as there had been a long drought.

We spent New Year's Eve 1980 at the Hardap Dam where we were entertained by some other guests singing the Afrikaans song 'Sarie Marais', an unforgettable experience.

Top right is my Mum looking out over the Fish River Canyon, which is also the backdrop.

Photos converted from 1980 slides.

Sunday challenge... Impact/event
For this week's challenge: something, someone or an event that impacted your life in some way.
I will comment in the group later in the week. I have acquired a ghastly virus, feeling dire :-)

Gudrun, Amelia, and 2 other people have particularly liked this photo

The Fish River Canyon is located in the south of Namibia. It is the second largest canyon in the world and the largest in Africa, as well as the second most visited tourist attraction in Namibia. It features a gigantic ravine, in total about 100 miles (160 km) long, up to 27 km wide and in places almost 550 metres deep.

This rock formation collapsed in 1988. The Finger of God was quite a detour from our trip across the Namib desert in 1980, but it was worth it.
Located near Asab in South-West Africa, now Namibia.

Happy to hear you are getting back to the land of the living. Being ill is never fun and 8 days with a virus sounds rather unpleasant. I am not a happy camper when I am ill. Take it easy and get better each day. x

Unforgettable, and in a different era. Especially enjoyable as our travel companions were my parents.

An interesting experience, Gillian, and not one that I'd like to undertake.

It was absolutely fantastic, and in an era where we saw practically no one on our travels, and felt quite safe.

Ich war noch nie in Afrika, kenne es nur aus Filmen und kann vermuten, dass es sehr faszinierend dort ist, wenn nur nicht diese Armut und Not wäre ...

I lived in South Africa for 7 years, did this unforgettable trip to South West Africa, and also visited Swaziland. It is a wonderful and unique experience to be in Africa. It is a vast and incredible landscape. The history is very complex, as are the politics. In spite of all the inequalities, the people we met and worked with were happy and optimistic.
