The Toronto look

The Toronto look
In the early twentieth century in Toronto a lot of the new houses featured porch roofs supported by wooden columns mounted on taller brick piers. By the 1950s the columns and piers were often out of alignment. Many were replaced by ironwork like that here.

This is a festive group of porches; others are more traditionally staid.

Its cute and warm, tottaly opposite modern architecture, with that cubes and glass.
Just recently listen on radio about this craziness they do in Dubai and similar places in middle east, they put so much glass and you can imagine the cost of cooling that buildings, crazy world.

They do the same thing here, Marko. Toronto is filling up with glass towers. At one point Toronto was ordering so much glass that the manufacturers were slipping in defective glass to make up the orders -- which soon came flying off the buildings.

So we're building a city of buildings that are expensive to heat in winter, and expensive to cool in summer.

A comfortable looking neighborhood. Three story houses - "shotgun" interiors? Ant the one at right is quite festive - I bet the householder puts garlands on the railings for Christmas.

From my knowledge of this type of house, Bob, I'd say they probably started out with a kitchen and a front and back sitting-room on the ground floor. The back sitting room would end up as a dining room when families stopped sharing them.

The architectural style is appealing, the tight space between houses less so.

I apologize for the late reply, TLC. One of the things that strikes me when I go to towns outside Greater Toronto is the much greater space between houses. The oldest parts of Torotno are full of very narrow terrace houses, and very narrow houses of all types.

Good point, Esther. It works well with the simpler lines of buildings.
