Nathan Phillips Square, Toronto

Nathan Phillips Square, Toronto
New City Hall (1965) in the background. It is usually attributed to Viljo Revell, but he thought his colleagues Heikki Castren, Bengt Lundsten, and Seppo Valjus should also be credited.

John, what's wrong today? No construction site? Amazing!

Very nice perspective and compo. HFF

Thanks, Lutz. No worries -- I plan to visit a huge construction site on the weekend. HFF to you, too.

That looks rather familiar! I was there a few weeks ago. Lovely capture...not the easiest place to capture with a camera...I think you did more than very well. Good show.
I had no idea as to who designed it, or how it came about, till now.

Thats a great compo John and that amazing sky makes an appropriate backdrop!

Thanks, Denis. I tried to get the sky brighter but was too tired to do all the work necessary. It is a great blue, though.

Thanks, Diana. I'd forgotten my camera and had to take this with the much inferior camera on my phone, so I was pleased with how it turned out.

A corker of a shot John............brilliantly composed. I really like those curving concrete spans over the water and the way the people in the foreground are completely oblivious to you taking a photo of them, whilst they take a photo of themselves..!!

I see you managed to sneak a crane into the far background though :-)

John FitzGerald club has replied to Keith Burton club
Thanks, Keith. There's a lot of photography going on along this edge of the pool, so people tend to be oblivious to other people's cameras. To be true to Toronto you have to have a crane in your shot.

Why am I not sitting there?

I like it best in winter, Gisela, when the skating rink (which replaces the pool in the photo) is open. You have all sorts of happy families and couples there enjoying a good skate, plus tourists having a Canadian Experience. All levels of skating skill accommodated.

Super-impressed you shot this with you phone. Flawless composition, and love the green accents. Also looks like you're having fine weather over there.

Thanks very much, Sarah. The weather's been great lately, although still cool. We still have had only six days this summer when the temperature got up to 30C. Today was especially good.

A great composition with the arches, 'selfie' and architecture all working well together.

A fabulous scene and composition, John! I hope to get up there to see this truly beautiful city someday soon. This is probably my #1 city destination on my "bucket list."

Excellent picture of what passes as architecture these days.

I apologize fr the very late reply, Isisbridge. Most people in Toronto (including me) prefer Old City Hall to the new one. I don't have a photo of Old City Hall up here, but will post one in a few days. It's a brilliant Richardsonian Romanesque building -- I don't think that style made it to the UK but it was very popular in North America because of its detail and elegance. Canada and the States are full of fine examples.

The new building isn't very functional, either. To get from the top of one tower to the top of the other you take the elevator to the ground floor then cross to the other towere's elevators. The engineers also had to modify it extensively so it wouldn't fall down in a windstorm or deteriorate because of differences in expansion betwwen the north and south sides.

They did want to tear the old building down, of course, but the enraged citizenry stopped them.

Missed this one! Fascinating lines of sight - all the Saarinen-arches across the pool and the arced buildings behind them. Anything but straight! Very dynamic picture.

Oh - and the couple taking a selfie (selfus?) - at least they don't have one of those thrice-damned sticks. There oughtta be a law.

I apologize for the very late reply, Bob, Thank you very much. This side of the pool is the selfie space. You can get the big Toronto sign in behind you.
