Palatka Courthouse Confederate Memorial (#0393)
At the Putnam County Courthouse in Palatka, the Confederate Memorial is the central feature of its grounds. Due to the statues location, it is regularly passed by everyone having any obligations at the court -- the town of Palatka is 48% black. The statue was erected in 1924, by the United Daughters of the Confederacy – just after the end of the period of lynchings and the growth of the KKK.

That sort of phrase on all of the Confederate monuments, it's closely related to the Jim Crow-era "Lost Cause" movement . That could all be part of a past if there were other monuments to other things, but in most of the small towns, the monuments remain the dominant monument.

One of my early research jobs was working on a project in the 70's where we had to code every county in the U.S. (before there were online data bases). I was surprised at the number of same-name counties across the country.
