Palatka Courthouse Confederate Memorial (#0393)
At the Putnam County Courthouse in Palatka, the Confederate Memorial is the central feature of its grounds. Due to the statues location, it is regularly passed by everyone having any obligations at the court -- the town of Palatka is 48% black. The statue was erected in 1924, by the United Daughters of the Confederacy – just after the end of the period of lynchings and the growth of the KKK.
Inscription on Front (south side):
Although The Flag They Died To Save
Floats Not O’er Any Land Or Sea
Throughout Eternal Years Shall Wave
The Banner Of Their Chivalry
“1861 – Our Confederate Heroes – 1865”
Inscription on west side:
The Principles
For Which They Fought
Will Live Eternally
