Hastings potato capital (#0348)

Hastings potato capital (#0348)
Based on a 2017 article in the Florida Times Union (link below), this is the former town hall and community center. Besides the changes in the farming economy and automation, the town was also severely damaged by a huge fire back in 1985 that wiped out a good portion of downtown. It’s never recovered and in 2017 the town was debating whether to dissolve the town government.

Interestingly, a part of the fate of the town is affected by the fact that many years ago the town drew its boundaries very tightly so that only sections of towns with whites could vote in town elections, thus the large numbers of blacks who still live near (but not in) Hastings can’t vote on whether to dissolve the town.

Your second paragraph gave me a chuckle. I just looked at Hastings on GMaps and Street View. Astonishing number of churches, I imagine a very small congregation for each. Sad little town, with strangely pretty environment. Of course the old, empty buildings look melancholy.

You may have seen more on street view than I did driving through :)
