Hm, I like that is visible in this shot because you can recognize the high of these bridges by this tiny ship...

I also prefer the look of the older bridge, though one of the enduring images in my mind of the Loma Prieta quake was the video of the car in the distance driving off the collapsed portion of it. I think of that every time I see a picture of this bridge.

When Loma Prieta happened I was working in Oakland and drove relatively often (though BART'd most of the time), so went over the bridge often. I wasn't particularly bothered by the bridge problem, because of seeing the collapsed double-decker freeway in Oakland which was far worse of a problem.

Being there and actually seeing the fallen double-decker (was that called the Nimitz?) would probably make the small segment of the Bay Bridge that fell seem tiny, especially since I don't think anybody on the bridge was actually killed. (I could be wrong.) The helicopter shots in the immediate aftermath of the double-decker collapse were nightmarish.

Somewhere I have some pictures of the fallen Nimitz, but it looks like I haven't scanned them. I should, just for history. Per Wikipedia, 42 died with the collapse of the Nimitz, one died in the Bay Bridge collapse. Considering how much my own apartment bounded that day, and for how long, I would not have wanted to be on either of those structures.
