Pregnant wall
TSC The Sunday Challenge, 13.08.17 "Walls"

The pregnant house in the Waagestr. in Lüneburg.
The stones are covered with gypsum mortar from the Lüneburger Kalkberg, which should be called Gipsberg. Because of the proverbial diligence of the Lüneburgers, the plaster was "dead burned". This too strongly burned plaster has the property of absorbing quite a lot of moisture in the course of time and therefore expands.
The bulbous shape of the house wall is created by absorbing moisture. Since the 12th century brick houses were built, the Lüneburgs used the gypsum and the anhydrite of the limestone as a lime mortar substitute. If there is a risk of humidity in the interior, rain or ground water entering the masonry, a chemical process begins in the masonry.
In the moist, cold outer wall, the anhydrite reacts to gypsum with increasing volume, while no reaction takes place in the warm, dry wall of the building. Thus the walls grow on the outer side.
Since the swelling is not strong enough to lift the whole house, it pushes the outer brick layer outwards and forms a "belly".
