Visages des Pays de la Loire

Laval enjoys a significant architectural heritage, with portions of city walls, medieval houses, old bridges and churches - and especially with its castle and keep (13th c.) which are located on a rocky spur overlooking the Mayenne river (see PiP).

The medieval town is still encircled by several portions of city walls, it was enclosed in ramparts from the 13th c. Once there were 5 gates in the walls of which the sole one remaining is the "Porte Beucheresse", birthplace of the painter Henri Rousseau, known as "le Douanier Rousseau" (see PiP).

The Old Bridge dates from the 13th century, it's the oldest bridge in the city. It remained the only bridge in Laval until the construction of the "Pont Neuf" in the early 19th century.

Le "Pont Vieux" date du 13ème siècle, c'est le plus ancien pont de la ville . Il est resté le seul pont de Laval jusqu'à la construction du "Pont Neuf" au début du 19ème siècle. "MUST SEE" IN LAVAL: the old castle over the Mayenne river. The "Pont Vieux" (old brigde) dates from the 13th century, it's the oldest bridge in the city . It remained the only bridge until the construction of the "Pont Neuf" (new bridge) in the early 19th century. "EIN MUSS" IN LAVAL : die alte Burg oberhalb des Flusses Mayenne. Die "Pont Vieux" (alte Brücke) stammt aus dem 13. Jh. und ist die älteste Brücke der Stadt . Bis zum Bau der "Pont Neuf" (neue Brücke) zu Beginn des 19. Jh. blieb sie die einzige Brücke.

Les remparts du 13ème siècle comportaient autrefois 5 portes, cette porte (la "Porte Beucheresse") est la seule qui subsiste, mais plusieurs parties des anciens murs sont encore visibles . Elle est également le lieu de naissance du peintre Henri "Douanier" Rousseau, considéré comme l'un des premiers peintres de l'art Naïf. Il est notamment connu pour ses représentations de jungles et de paysages luxuriants. THE DOOR OF MULTIPLE FATES... Sie ist ebenfalls der Geburtsort des Malers Henri "Douanier" Rousseau, der als einer der ersten Maler der Naiven Kunst gilt. Er ist insbesondere für seine Darstellungen von Dschungeln und üppigen Landschaften bekannt.

Cette tour ronde se dresse toujours au milieu du "Parc des Forges", entourée d'un double fossé aujourd'hui comblé, seul vestige d'un château féodal construit au XVe siècle, Les ravages de la guerre de 100 ans ont contribué à sa destruction. Il reste très peu d'éléments pour retracer son histoire, et le mystère de la tour n'en devient que plus grand. Appelée la "Tour Eugène Sue" après une anecdote de la tradition locale (l'écrivain Eugène Sue -1804-1857- aurait écrit son roman "Le Juif errant" au premier étage de cette tour, transmettant ensuite ses écrits à son journal par la diligence de Paris). ******** THIS IS ALL WHAT REMAINS OF THE CASTLE... it is only a memory today. This round tower still stands in the middle of the park, surrounded by a double moat now filled in, the only vestige of a feudal castle that was built in the 15th century. The ravages of the 100-Years-War contributed to its destruction. There are very few elements left to retrace its history, and the mystery of the tower becomes all the greater. Called the "Eugène Sue Tower" after an anecdote from the local lore (the writer Eugène Sue -1804-1857- would have written his novel "The Wandering Jew" on the first floor of this tower, then forwarding his writings to his journal by the diligence of Paris)..

Deux grosses pierres dans le lac, autour duquel nous nous sommes baladés par ce temps ensoleillé. TURTLE BACKS? Two huge stones in the lake, around which we took a walk on this sunny day. SCHILDKRÖTENRÜCKEN ? Zwei Riesensteine im See, um den wir bei dem sonnigen Wetter einen Spaziergang machten.

Thanks to the bamboo, the area looks already quite green. BANC DU SAMEDI POUR LUNDI. Grâce au bambou, l'endroit était déjà bien vert. SAMSTAGS-BANK FÜR MONTAG. Dank des Bambus sah es schon recht grün aus.
