Les maisons du bourg sont souvent construites en grès rose extrait à Sainte-Suzanne. La crête des grès est traversée par l'Erve qui s'y est déblayé un étroit et pittoresque passage IN THE NARROW STREETS OF THE OLD CITY. The houses in the village are mostly built of pink sandstone mined in Sainte-Suzanne. The ridge of the sandstones is crossed by the Erve river, which has dug a narrow and picturesque passage there. IN DEN GASSEN DES ALTEN ORTES. Die Häuser im Dorf sind grösstenteils aus rosa Sandstein gebaut, der in Sainte-Suzanne abgebaut wurde. Der Sandstein-Kamm wird von der Erve durchquert, die sich dort einen schmalen und malerischen Durchgang gegraben hat.

Une forteresse royale imprenable. Construite au XIIIe siècle, la gigantesque forteresse de 17 tours de schiste et de calcaire qui s’étendent sur près d’un demi-kilomètre dégage une formidable impression de puissance. Aux XIVe et XVe siècles, les ducs d’Anjou, princes éclairés, redonnent à Angers le faste d’une vie de cour dont témoigne l’architecture raffinée du site.

Behind her beautiful covered porch is situated the "Basilica of Our Lady", well known for its chapel of Notre-Dame-de-l'Epine (12th century), with 13th-century wall paintings and Aubusson tapestries. The nave and tower of the church of Notre-Dame date from the 11th century, the rest of the structure dates from the 17/18th century.

Even if it hasn't yet been proven, it's likely that a few people were already installed on the rock overhanging the River Sarthe during the Roman occupation. In the 7th c., around 10 families were registered on the site called Faxinidum. The city history really begins with the erection of the castle in the 10th c. The purpose of the castle was mostly to ensure protection of the river crossing. Strategic importance of the Castle of Fresnay was particularly highlighted during the 100 Years' War, but from then, the castle started to gradually fall into ruins.

The gate of Fresnay Castle (top right in the collage) dates back to the 14th century and still stands with its two round towers flanked by embrasures. It leads to a small park with these ruines of the keep, the only remaining witness of the old castle from the 9th century. A little further from the ramparts, there is a nice view of the Sarthe. RUINES AU SOLEIL DU SOIR. La poterne du château de Fresnay (en haut à droite dans le collage) date du XIVe siècle, elle est toujours debout avec ses deux tours rondes flanquées de meurtrières. Elle donne accès à un petit parc où l'on voit ces ruines du donjon, seul témoin qui subsiste de l'ancien château du IXe siècle. Plus loin depuis les remparts, une vue plongeante sur la rivière Sarthe. RUINEN IN DER ABENDSONNE. Die Pforte der Burg Fresnay (oben rechts in der Collage) stammt aus dem 14. Jh. und steht noch immer mit ihren beiden Rundtürmen, die von Schiessscharten flankiert werden. Sie führt zu einem kleinen Park, in dem diese Ruinen des Wachturms stehen, den einzigen verbliebenen Zeugen der alten Burg aus dem 9. Jh. Etwas weiter von der Stadtmauer aus hat man einen schönen Blick auf den Fluss Sarthe.
