Oldest castle I've ever discovered - HFF
The castle of Courmenant dates from the 9th century. Its Carolingian origin is clearly evident from the character of the remaining masonry, and especially from the absence of buttresses on the outer walls (a distinctive feature of military castles before the 11th century). At the end of the 8th century, the Normans and Bretons were threatening the Maine region. As early as 810 Charlemagne noted the places where the enemy could most easily penetrate the interior of the country, and subsequently several fortresses were established on the left bank of the Mayenne river. The construction of the keep at Courmenant on a rocky spur overlooking a steep escarpment above the river and a marshy area met the programme requirements.
