Where The Earth Moves

Where The Earth Moves
A view of part of the magical Quiraing on the Isle of Skye viewed from the Uig side. I say magical because the landscape is truly fantastic, with craggy cliffs, pinnacles and plateaus as well as small lakes

The Quiraing is part of the Trotternish Ridge escarpment which was formed by a series of landslips, and is one of the the largest in Britain, the Quiraing being the only one where the land is still moving. The road below it needs regular repair due to the way the land shifts a few centimetres each year.

The Quiraing comes from the Old Norse 'Kvi Rand'. meaning ' Round Fold'. The 'fold' of the landscape was used back then to conceal cattle from Viking raiders.

I have added Carole King's 'I Feel The Earth Move' as my link

Thank you very much Markus. For me this has to be one of the most breathtaking parts of Skye.
This picture is just a small part of it and it doesn't really do it justice but the landscape really captures the imagination.

Have a good week

That is really nice of you Markus but I doubt your pictures are bad!! The truth is it is difficult to take such a vast and beautiful landscape. Maybe we weill get to go there again and try for some better shots.

Thank you very much Fabio. I am really pleased you like it and I can see why you thought that it was a canyon. I love this landscape but this photo is just a part of it and cannot hope to do it justice. It is wild, ruggedly beautiful and magical and takes your breath away. Sorry to wax lyrical but I think I must have been Scottish in a previous life!!!

Enjoy the rest of your week. Best wishes Carol

Thank you very much Joe. There is so much to love about Skye, but the landscape around Trotternish and the Quiraing is so otherworldy it captures the imagination.

Exquisite. No man man structures, powerlines etc., hence an aura of originality of earth!?
Ecobird club has replied to Dinesh club
Thank you very much Dinesh. Yes you are right. The only man made thing around here is a car park on the other side of the road below it with very pushy car park attendants who are 'on you' the moment you stop, even if it is just to take a picture or two. It is sad really in such a wild and beautiful place, but I guess the road needs a lot of maintenance due the the ever shifting landscape and it is a way to recoup some of the costs.

Herrlich Carol.

Thank you very much Lothar, and for sharing your lovely memories of Skye. You are more energetic than I am, - we did our touring in the car but you probably saw a lot more on your mountain bike! I have to admt that Trotternish and the Quiraing are my favourite parts of Skye. The landscape is amazing.

Thank you very much Rosa. It is only a small part of the Quiraing The whole area is amazing and I couldn't hope to do it justice but I wanted some close up detail on this visit. Unfortunately we only wanted a few shots and weren't about to walk the trails, but the parking attendants were a little over enthusiastic so we went back down the road and I managed to get a couple of pictures with the long lens.

I am pleased you liked the music.

Ecobird club has replied to Herb Riddle club
Many thanks for your lovely kind comments and star Herb. For me this place is quite magical, and knowing I couldn't do justice to all of it I wanted a close up of this part. I hadn't banked on officious parkies and as we only wanted a few quick shots we gave up and went back down the road a way, and settled for using a bigger lens! I do understand in a way as the upkeep of the road must be expensive but I just found it a bit sad in an area so beautiful, wild and natural.
But that is progress I guess.

Best wishes Carol

Ecobird club has replied to MaggsMep club
Thank you very much Maggs. I was pleased I had the long lens with me as we were able to stop some distance away and still get a close up shot. Parking to just take a couple of quick photos was not possible with the parkies chasing for money, though if we go back and want to walk the area I would not object to paying. To be honest though the whole parking area seemed a little unsightly and obstrusive in such a wild and natural place. I guess that is progress!!!
