Road through Raincliffe Woods - North Yorkshire

Road through Raincliffe Woods - North Yorkshire
The road runs through Raincliffe Woods, an area of ancient woodland.

In the United Kingdom, an ancient woodland is a woodland that has existed continuously since 1600 or before in England, Wales and Northern Ireland (or 1750 in Scotland). Before those dates, planting of new woodland was uncommon, so a wood present in 1600 was likely to have developed naturally.

Ancient beech trees
Beech Trees Raincliffe Woods

In most ancient woods, the trees and shrubs have been cut down periodically as part of the management cycle. Provided that the area has remained as woodland, the stand is still considered ancient. Since it may have been cut over many times in the past, ancient woodland does not necessarily contain very old trees.

Species of plants which are particularly characteristic of ancient woodland sites are called ancient woodland indicator species, examples of such indicators are; wood anemone (above), bluebells, yellow archangel and primrose.

A beautiful main picture Doug. The road doesn't look very wide. I love the shape of the beech trees in the second picture, and the third with bluebells and anemones is so charming and typical of our forests and woods in the spring.

Doug Shepherd club has replied to Rosalyn Hilborne club
Many thanks for your kind appreciation Rosa. The road is not as narrow as it appears, room for two cars to pass with care. You don't however want to meet a large truck or bus coming the other way!

A beautiful series. I like all of them but love the old beech trees particularly. You've just reminded me of an old wood in Galloway which was coppiced for charcoal in the past. I'd forgotten all about it. Must visit when I go down there in September.
