Step Rock tidal swimming pool

Step Rock tidal swimming pool
The Step Rock swimming tidal pool was opened in 1902 closing in 1978. The buildings and small pools on the left are now part of an aquarium which presently occupies the site. The larger main tidal pool looks to be abandoned.

A great place to spend a summer day. The last time I swam here would have been in the summer of 1959. As a young lad then living may miles from the sea I thought it was heaven, although a little chilly at times!

What a shame it closed. I suppose as it got older it needed more and more in the way of repairs, and I dare say the Council just didn't have the wonga!
Fine shot though!
Best wishes,
Andy

You are probably right Andy. Over the years the winter storms must have done considerable damage to the infrastructure to the point where the economics were unsustainable. A few years after it closed the Step Rock was replaced by a new indoor leisure centre (with pool) at the East Sands on the other side of the town.

Thanks for the visit, Doug

And again the council tried to update the east sands area. I can't understand why they got rid of the laundry! And as for the caravan park on the Kinkell Braes .... words fail me. Why can't the authorities leave well alone? ;-))))

The caravan park always reminds me of a German PoW camp, all that is missing is the barbed wire, guards and watch towers!

Many thanks for your visit Boarischa. It has since been replaced by an indoor pool.

I used to love swimming here, Doug; and yes it was chilly, but we always had 'chittery bites'. I don't know how popular the sea-life centre is but I won't visit it out of spite. ;-)))

I remember that it was always very busy, certainly more so than the sea-life centre appears to be!
