Die Igelfliege: ein harmloser Blütenbesucher - The tachinid fly: a harmless flower visitor
Die mit auffälligen Stacheln ausgestattete Fliege Tachina fera besucht sehr gerne Blüten, wie im Bild von der Gewöhnlichen Goldrute (Solidago virgaurea), und saugt dort nahrhaften Nektar. Die Weibchen der Igelfliegen legen ihre Eier in direkter Nähe zu Raupen verschiedener Eulenfalter ab. Die geschlüpften Larven bohren sich dann in die Körper der Raupen und fressen sie langsam von innen her auf. Daher der Familienname Raupenfliegen - Tachinidae.
Die Raupenfliegen haben eine potenzielle wirtschaftliche Bedeutung für die Schädlingsbekämpfung im Wald.

The female tachina lays its eggs in close proximity to the caterpillars of various owlet moths. The hatched larvae then bore into the caterpillars' bodies and slowly eat them from the inside.
