Kleiner Perlmutterfalter - Issoria lathonia - Queen of Spain fritillary

The Queen of Spain fritillary (Issoria lathonia) had overwintered as a caterpillar and pupated at the end of winter. In April, the butterfly hatched and is now in the process of establishing a spring generation.
The butterfly likes to occur in dry grassland areas and is considered endangered in some German states. The photograph was taken in a Franconian protected area.
