Insekten Highlights 2021 (3) - Der Fetthennen-Bläuling - Insect Highlights 2021 - The chequered blue - PiP

The chequered blue (Scolitantides orion) is a small blue that flies in spring in abandoned vineyards with dry stone walls. The upper side of the butterfly ooks like all blue butterflies (sse PiP), but the underside is exceptionally pretty. The females lay their eggs on plants of the genus Hylotelephium, especially on the great stonecrop (Hylotelephium telephium). The Butterflies are only found in a few parts of Germany. They are on the German Red List and threatened with extinction. The University of Würzburg is currently conducting a research project on this butterfly species.
The photo was taken in a Franconian nature reserve. The exact location is not mentioned for understandable reasons. The male butterfly in the photo is sucking on a blossom of field hornwort (Cerastium arvense).
