Ein Blick 230 Millionen Jahre zurück - A look 230 million years back - HFF

The lowest layers in this quarry are about 230 million years old (time of the first dinosaurs). The Franconian quarries were formed by deposits in a huge shallow sea (north of the Alps) that was connected to the ocean (Tethys) to the south. In part, enormous limestone deposits of up to 100 m were formed (see PiP). Franconian shell limestone is a sought-after building material. However, quarrying competes with nature conservation goals, so that locally there are always fierce conflicts between environmentalists and owners of limestone quarries.
The picture shows a quarry that has been exploited and abandoned in the meantime. Directly above where the trees are located is a very important nature reserve for Lower Franconia with many orchid species.
Happy 2nd Advent and HFF!
