Mispel - Mespilus germanica - common medlar
Die Mispel (Mespilus germanica) ist ein kleinwüchsiger Baum mit ausladender Krone aus der Familie der Kernobstgewächse. Auffällig sind die braun-orangen, apfelähnlichen, etwa 3-4 cm großen Früchte, die dem Baum eine gewisse Exotik verleihen. Die aus Klein- bis Mittelasienasien stammende Mispel wurde von den Römern im nördlichen Ausdehnungsbereich des römischen Reiches verbreitet. Die Früchte schmecken sehr adstringierend, nach dem Frost werden sie weich und essbar und man kann eine wohlschmeckende Marmelade herstellen. Aus diesem Grund war die Mispel früher weit verbreitet.
Übrigens wird die Mispel in Skakespeares Romeo und Julia besungen (2. Akt):
"Wenn die Liebe blind ist, kann sie das Ziel nicht treffen.
Nun wird er unter einem Mispelbaum sitzen,
und wünschen, dass seine Geliebte diese Art von Frucht wäre"...
