Der Kolibri, der ein Schmetterling ist - The hummingbird that is a butterfly - PiPs

The hummingbird hawk-moth (Macroglossum stellatarum) is a day-active moth, which can be observed not only in the wild, but also in our gardens on flowers with long calyxes (phlox, buddleja, for example). Before each flower it stops briefly in a slightly humming buzz and then changes to the next flower. During this buzzing flight its wings beat 70 - 90 times per second, so that a sharp image is usually not possible (see PiPs). In the past, the hummingbird hawk-moth used to migrate from Southern Europe every year, and for some years now they have been hibernating in Southern Germany because of the mild winter, so that hummingbird hawk-moths can be seen on warm days as early as March.
The photo shows a butterfly sucking nectar from a flower of Saponaria officinalis.
