San Zeno Maggiore, Basilica in Verona

The imposing Basilica San Zeno Maggiore is the finest church in Verona and one of the oldest and most important in Northern Italy. The first church was erected here in the fourth century to house the bones of San Zeno but the present building is mostly from the twelfth century (Romanesque), although the apse and roof are late fourteenth century. The separate campanile (s. PiP) was completed in 1178 while the cloister (s. PiP) dates from 1123 to 1313. San Zeno was one of the favourite places of German kings on their way to the imperial coronation in Rome in the Middle Ages.
A visit is also highly recommended, as the monastery complex is located at some distance from the centre of Verona and it is reasonably quiet here. The picture was taken during a bicycle tour from Bolzano to Venice.

And as for your pictures today...yep, a fine presentation as usual! Always a treat, this time my wide eyes wandered happily over your main image, which totally blew me away, quite frankly. In fact, I couldn't help but utter out loud, "WOW!!" because you got such awesome lighting and details. A really great vantage-point as well, it was nice to just stare at all of the opulence in front of me. One who is truly appreciating such a thing must consider the vast amount of time, expense, and work that such a structure entails. It's insane...and to think that many places like this are partly--if not mostly--recycled or pillaged from another place like it. GOBSMACKING to roll this around in one's mind, no? Both of your insets are fantastic. I always love how ornate churches like this are quite often fairly plain on the outside. Kind of like a geode. Plain until you crack it open and then....WOW!!! :D Your other inset is a graphic designer's delight with spacial and composition perfection, along with just the right type of lighting. MARVELOUS. What fine control you have and a practiced eye to put it all together. :) WELL DONE.
Reading about this place made me smile because it indicates just what I was talking about above...the prevalence of churches to recycle, build upon and take from other structures to create what stands there now. It's just crazy to think about all of the details involved. Thanks so much for sharing these details with us. It's all very interesting to put it together with your fine imagery!
Thanks again, and as always...you rock! :)
I was there and enjoyed it very much
schöne PiPs!
